‘Bhomra Majhi of Hulmarar’—Not a Naxalite but a Common Farmer Nabagopal Samanta, State-Aided College Teacher, Category-I, Yogoda Satsanga Palpara Mahavidyalaya (B.Ed. Department), M.A., M.Phil., NET, M.Ed., West Bengal, India
In the seventies of the 20th century in Bengali Literature, a brilliant astrologer Bhagirath Mishra’s unique work ‘Hulmarar Bhamra Majhi’ is a story. As a result of the lack of rain, Bhamra could not grow crops on the land of Bankubihari Aich, the landlord of Hulmara. So, the husband and wife joined the party procession in Bishtupur in the hope of getting some grain and water but did not get food. From hunger themselves at home, hoping for one packet of puffed rice for their three-year-old starving children, they wandered around the city’s agricultural fair and picked up a little cake lying under their feet. When they were insulted by the disguised Bhamra Majhi, they lost their anger and kicked the ‘disguised Bhamra Majhi’ in the stomach. The real Hulmara’s Bhamra Majhi is branded as a Naxalite in an ugly political hunt of the minister- bureaucrat cherished regime based on his death.
