The word, “mother”, is multidimensional. Though it is a tiny word but it has deep philosophical and emotional aspects. The concept of mother and motherhood are not same though they seem to be identical in general way. In normal social structure, we consider a woman as a mother who conceives a baby in her own womb and gives birth to it. But it can to be the only criteria to be considered as mother as there are many women who are unable to conceive a baby in their own womb due to physical, professional, biological issues, but they adopt babies or take help of surrogate mothers to fulfill their desire of motherhood. In these cases we can’t say they those women are not mothers. And apart from these, the emotion of motherhood can be found in many relationships in our society and family, like - aunts, uncles, grandfather, and grandmother and so on. The idea or concept of motherhood gives us feelings of love, affection, care etc. and these emotions are available and expressed by above mentioned people as well apart from mothers. And one more important aspect is gay couples. When a gay couple opt for child and get it by any means either by adopting one or by taking help of surrogate mother, they love the baby equally as a woman is believed to do the same. The concept of “mother” can be related to women only but the concept of “motherhood” has no gender barrier or limitation. | |
