“Storyteller Narendranath Mitra in the Analysis of the Psychology of Men and Women”
Dr. Shipra Dutta, Associate Professor, Department of Bengali, Maharaja Bir Bikram College, Agartala, West Tripura, India.
Narendranath Mitra (1917-1975), a prolificstoryteller of the forties. Family problems and psychological tension of Bengali middle class, lower middleclass life are the main themes of his literature. There is no such romantic story instead there is practicality in his story. There are very familiar stories of known people. He wrote about four hundred stories. I will try to present in my essay some selected stories of psychoanalysis of men and women.
Narendranath Mitra pursued reality through various stories in solitude and silence. The actres`s story presents a perfect picture of middleclass life in Kolkata during that time. ‘the happiness of the family is due to the quality of the women’-the truth of this much discussed saying is found where women empowerment has to be maintained in all aspects through acting. So, Lavanya has to act constantly in her family.
The story ‘Mahasweta’ does not contain much narrative; it is a realistic picture of the unfolding of the psychological analysis of tasteful, beautiful women named Mahasweta (Amita). The significance of the female character is the taste of motherhood. This type of perfect psychological analysis can be seen in the story of ‘Dampatya’. In the story of ‘Abataranika’ we see the story of indomitable struggle to survive in a middleclass family in the complex socio-economic context of the forties. In the story ‘Ekpo dudh’- a well-known picture of the lowermiddleclass life has been presented to us through a brand new psychological analysis.
The period when the storyteller appeared in the arena of Bengali literature was the era of decadence of human values. Apart from this, World War II, Manyantar, communal riots, country partition etc; made people`s minds broken. Contemporary writters expressed the various aspects of the period in a slightly distorted way with intense thrust. But Narendranath Mitra, instead of going in that direction, has presented the contemporary film in a slightly different way with a softhearted sweetness. People want to save themselves through suffering and struggle. So, there is no harshness in his story, no excess of slant. With the magic touch of simple and uncomplicated writting, his story penetrates into the jewels of human hearts and explores an unenlightened world. This is his uniqueness.
Keywords: Psychological, Narrative, Communual, Contemporary, Harshness.
