‘Surya Dighal Bari’ and ‘Chilekothar
Sepai’: Multiplicity of Voices through the Lens of Narrative and Reality Samarjit Sharma, Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Indian Comparative Literature, Assam University, Silchar, Assam, India.
Time is an integral part of a novel. Akhtarujjaman Iliyas' _Chilekothar Sepai_ and _Khowabnama_ show how a skilled novelist can effortlessly handle the truth depicted in a novel. We have not seen a lot of writers gaining fame in their very first attempt at writing novels. Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's _Pather Panchali_ and Abu Ishaq's _Surja Deeghal Bari_ remind of such instances. _Surja Deeghal Bari_ made Abu Ishaq's name an enduring one in the literary world of Bengal. From the language movement of 1952 to the liberation war of 1971- they all enter the literary space, where cultural conflict and political struggle become inseparable. As we have experienced political changes in post-colonial India, the literary world has also transformed after the independence. Even in Bangladesh, events like the language movement and the liberation war have made the literary stream change its course. We have seen the transformation of world literature as the Russian Revolution brought about some significant socio-economic and political changes. The fact is that revolutions give rise to path-breaking literary creations. Those creations, like individual tunes, contribute to the polyphony of different literary works. This paper will attempt to analyze the novels from the perspective of comparative literature. It will also try to understand the novel as a literary genre.
