Quest for Life and Self-Realization in “Abhijnana Shakuntalam” Dr. Krishna Dhibar, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Rampurhat College, Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
In the pages of literature, various experiences of life are captured and on the other hand, solutions to overcome various problems of life are also found. The writer paints a full picture of a perfect life in literature at his own creation. Kalidasa worshiped Satya, Shiva and Sundar. So, he saw life in terms of perfection. In the drama Shakuntalam, Kalidasa gave simple answers to various questions of our life and gave various moral lessons in the life. At the very beginning of the play he teaches us to bow to an invisible force. That energy drives our lives. With that power, we move forward on the path of happiness. Kalidasa realizes the true value of life through morality and spiritual education in every scene of his drama. In the fourth act of the drama, when Shakuntala is cursed, Priyambada is at Durvasa's feet to appease his anger. It is not only love for friend but moral philosophy of our life. Every man's life is covered with deep sorrow, in which sorrow we sink momentarily. By plunging into the sorrow we seek to discover the wisdom of Rasa. This sense of humour is consciousness in the midst of confusion. But in order to find joy in this disparity, separation is necessary. In Kalidasa's poetry, that separation has been normalized. Kalidasa brings a lot of sorrow into the lives of Dushyanta and Shakuntala, de-taints their lives and instils deep faith in life.
