Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray’s Thoughts on Education and His Contribution to the Field of Learning

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy (1861–1944) was a pioneering Indian chemist, educator, and thinker whose contributions extend beyond science into the realm of education and national development. His educational philosophy is deeply intertwined with his belief in self-reliance, national pride, and the empowerment of the individual through practical and holistic education.
Prafulla Chandra Roy was a strong advocate of science education, especially in colonial Bengal, where he sought to inspire a new generation of students to take pride in India’s intellectual traditions while embracing modern scientific advancements.
He argued that teaching science and technical subjects in the mother tongue would make them more accessible to the masses and break the elitist barriers imposed by colonial education systems. He was also a supporter of vocational education, emphasizing the need for practical skills that could directly contribute to the economic and industrial development of India. His view was that education must cultivate moral responsibility.
Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy’s philosophy was part of a broader nationalist movement that sought to decolonize education. His focus on science and technical education as a means for national regeneration. His educational ideals laid the foundation for subsequent developments in India’s educational policies, especially in the fields of science and technology.
This research article explores that Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy’s educational philosophy, rooted in the integration of scientific, ethical, and practical learning, offers valuable insights into the role of education in personal and national development. His vision of an education system that promotes self-reliance, moral responsibility, and social consciousness continues to be relevant in today’s educational discourse.
