Exploring the Mysteries of Quantum Physics in the Light of Advaita Philosophy
Dr. Krishna Dhibar,
Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Rampurhat College, West Bengal, India
The intersection of Advaita Vedanta, a profound non-dualistic school of Indian philosophy, and Quantum Physics, a cornerstone of modern science, opens an intriguing dialogue about the nature of reality. Advaita posits that Brahman the ultimate, indivisible reality—is the substratum of all existence, while the world of multiplicity is merely an illusion (Maya). Quantum Physics, through principles such as wave-particle duality, uncertainty, and entanglement, similarly challenges classical notions of determinism and objective reality. Both frameworks converge on a key insight: the perceived plurality of the universe masks an underlying unity.
This paper explores the conceptual parallels between Advaita and Quantum Mechanics, particularly in three areas: (1) Reality and Illusion—Advaita’s Maya and Quantum indeterminacy; (2) Observer and Observation—the role of consciousness in shaping experience versus the observer effect in quantum measurements; and (3) Unity in Diversity-Brahman as the one without a second and quantum non-locality as evidence of fundamental interconnectedness. Classical Upanishadic aphorisms such as “Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma” (“All this is Brahman) and modern physicists’ reflections, notably by Schrödinger and Heisenberg, provide a philosophical and scientific basis for this comparative inquiry.
Far from being an attempt to conflate spirituality with science, this study proposes a dialogical approach, emphasizing how Advaita and Quantum Physics, despite their distinct epistemologies, complement each other in illuminating the ultimate question: What is reality? The synthesis of these perspectives may offer a broader, integrative understanding of consciousness, matter, and the universe an understanding that transcends disciplinary boundaries and points toward a unified vision of existence.
