Ayer’s Verification Principle: A Review Ria Bhattacharyya, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, The University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
Ayer’s verification principle is a key idea in logical positivism, developed by him in his book Language, Truth and Logic (1936). According to the principle of verification a statement is meaningful only if it is analytic (true by definition) or it is empirically verifiable (can be tested by experience or observation); otherwise, it is cognitively meaningless. Ayer used the principle to dismiss metaphysical claims (like God’s Existence) as meaningless, arguing that they are not factually verifiable. But he later faced criticism from Isaiah Berlin and Alonzo Church. In this paper we shall discuss all these things as given in his Language, Truth and Logic.
