Material Theory according to Vaisheshika and Ayurveda Philosophy: A Study Tithi Naskar, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Gour Mohan Sachin Mandal Mahavidyalaya, Kolkata, India
The world where living and non-living beings exist are full of innumberable objects (Padārthas). So we are habituated to see this world in the context of Padārthas. ‘Padārtha’ literally means the objects denoted by a word. According to the Vaiśes̟ikas all objects are broadly divided into two classes i.e. being (Bhāva) and non-being (Abhāva). There are six kinds of Bhāva Padārthas namely substance (Dravya), quality (Gun̟a), action (Karma), generality (Sāmānya), particularity (Viśes̟a) and inherence (Samavāya). A̅yurveda system also acceptes six types of Bhāva Padārthas i.e. generality(Sāmānya), particularity(Viśes̟a), Substance(Dravya), quality(Gun̟a), action(Karma) and inherence(Samavāya). A lot of similarities are shown in the theory of Padārthas of A̅yurveda and Vaiśes̟ika system. But the main goal of the two systems are not same. The main goal of Vaiśes̟ika Śhastra is to attain liberation or Moks̟ha. According to Vaiśes̟ikas Moks̟ha means ‘permanently free from all kinds of pain and sufferings’. On the other hand, the main goal of Āyurveda Śhastra is to maintain the good health through curing the diseses and achive long life. Although both systems admit that ignorance about six Padārthas is the root cause of all pain and sufferings. Through this research paper I want to delve a comparative and comprehensive study of the theory of Padārthas between A̅yurveda and Vaiśes̟ika system.
