ABSTRACT | |||
We are taught to recognize the East in terms of the dominance and manifestation of power of colonial civilization. Colonialism repeatedly misleads us. The colonial model, ignoring our own stream of literary culture and historical practice, maintains its dominance in all areas. Although the colonial-influenced historical practice and nationalist historical practice began in the 19th century, Bengali had been bearing witness to the sense of history even before that. When the traditional stream of compiled Vaishnava verses was gradually eroding since the 17th century, Vaishnava verse compilers came forward to save the history of Bengal within the cultural heritage by compiling and preserving it. This act of preservation established a sense of responsibility towards tradition in the life of Bengal before colonialism. Despite facing much neglect from the educated people, that stream continued to make and renew its own identity. The initiatives of the 18th and 19th century poets, however, speak differently, which push our conventional ideas from within and create a different history. The article will analyze a neglected trend in various Vaishnava collections of poetry in post-colonial thought. | |||
