Bengali Middle-class Life and the Novels of Ramapada Chowdhury Dr. Mousumi Pal, Associate Professor, Swami Vivekananda Mahavidyalaya, Tripura, India. | |
In the seventies and eighties, the novelist Ramapada's distinctive approach can be noticed. He analyzed the middle class society in detail in his novels of this period. His novels reveal the complex mindset of the middle class. Ramapada’s novel mainly exposes different aspects of Bengali life. His novels are characterized by his intelligence, focus, firm conviction and above all, modest diction. This feature is evident in the early novels of the author and his speech becomes clear and sharp in the later novels. Along with the changing situation of the middle class, how the character of the middle class is changing under the harsh impact of reality is observed in the author's novels based on the middle class life. In the fifty years since independence, the silent shift that has taken place in the life of the Bengali middle class has not escaped Ramapada's sight. We observe this gradual change of the familiar world in the literary work of the novelist. Although the topic is timeless, there is innovation in the style of presentation. Novels draw the attention of the reader by analyzing the characterizations, incidents and interactions within the context of a period of life. Variation is a special feature in Ramapada's novel. Till 'Kharij' he is a seeker of variety in the subject of the novel. Again in the later novels of 'Kharij' he explores variations on the same theme.
