Puja Bhuinya, Researcher, Dept. of Bengali, Banaras Hindu University, Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, India
ABSTRACT
Ritwik Kumar Ghatak is primarily known as a prominent figure in the film world, but he entered the artistic world through literature, as an editor of the magazine ‘Avidhara’ in 1947. Joining the ‘Bharatiya Gana Natya Sangha’ (Indian People’s Theatre Association) influenced his art and literary world. From there, his play ‘Jwala’ was published in 1950. At the same time, he started writing, directing and acting in plays. This research article will focus on the playwright Ritwik Ghatak. Although he later thought that cinema was more sensitive than drama to reach more people at the same time. Therefore, he first chose stories, then Dramas and finally cinema as the best medium to connect with people. He has been associated with the ‘Natya Andalan’, has written original plays himself and translated plays. He even acted in several plays by Rabindranath in the early stages. It is known that Ritwik Ghatak’s original plays are five in number, at least the manuscripts of which have been found. Among them, ‘Jwala’ is a ‘Ekanka Natak’ (One-Act Play), where a class of people is shown suffering from class discrimination in society. The author has depicted this division of the human race in a very realistic way. The play was translated into Hindi in addition to Bengali. The main subject of this article is to explore the direction in which Ritwik Ghatak's play ‘Jwala’ has taken in the crowd of ‘Bangla Ekanka Natak’, as well as the search for the connection between Ritwik Ghatak and ‘Bangla Ekanka Natak’.
