The Role of Utpal Chakraborty and “Abhibyakti”
in the Study and Preservation of Regional Art and Culture with Special
Reference to Bankura District: A Brief Review Jharna Modak, Research Scholar, Department of History, Bankura University, Bankura, West Bengal, India
Bankura district occupies a special place in the practice of regional history. Since ancient times, this district has been distinguished from other districts of West Bengal in terms of art and culture. The terracotta horse known as the 'Bunkura Horse' has gained considerable prestige as the logo of the All India Handicrafts Board. Folk art and culture can be seen everywhere in the district. Two world famous artists Ramkinkar Baize and Jamini Roy were influenced by folk art. This continuous flow of art and culture from ancient times can be observed even today. Artist Utpal Chakraborty, who came as a professor at the Chander Basic Training College in the remote village of Chander, near Jamini Roy's birthplace Beliatore in the seventies, was overwhelmed by it. He discovers the latent creative talent among the college students as well as the villagers. Opposite the college, he established a center for arts and crafts and folk culture called 'Abhivyakti' and also constructed a museum at 'Abhivyakti' to preserve the art works of the villagers, to develop the artistic sensibilities of the local people. Gradually, 'Abhivyakti' got a special place in the tourism map of the district and it was transferred as Jamini Roy Institute of Art and Culture, the 4th campus under Bankura University to nurture the tireless work of Utpal Chakraborty, which would not be an exaggeration to say a recent addition to the practice of district and regional history.
