The Reconciliation of Individual Freedom and State Authority: A Philosophical Review in the Light of J. Krishnamurti
Baby Mondal, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Philosophy, Trivenidevi Bhalotia College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The conflict between the individual and the society is a traditional problem in the philosophy of society and the state. For most of us, the problem is presented to us in this way: is the individual a mere auxiliary tool of society or is it the goal of society? As an individual, am I used or managed or controlled by society and the government? Or does society or the state exist for the individual? Is the individual the goal of society, or is he a mere puppet to be taught and educated, to be used for selfish purposes, to be killed as a war machine in a demonic way, this problem is presented to us by most of us. In this case, the question of harmonizing the individual and society becomes relevant. In the project to solve the above problem, I will note two types of solutions here. First, socialism, second, individualism. But socialism can never be acceptable. Because here society is much more important than the individual. The individual is merely a tool of society. If we accept socialism, in this case our task will be to bring about changes in the entire education system so that the individual can be reduced to a machine, used, and destroyed. But if society exists for the individual, then its function will be to give the individual a sense of freedom, to create a desire for freedom. Therefore, society does not exist for the individual, but for the individual; the individual is the goal of society. If this is not accepted, the concept of individual freedom becomes an empty concept. The postmodern thinker Jiddu Krishnamurti is searching for a novel path beyond the boundaries of traditional philosophical approaches. The aim of my article is to follow Krishnamurti and reconcile individual freedom with state authority.
