Major Inter-State River Conflicts in India: A Theoretical Review
Sandipan Ganguly, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Geography, Mankar College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Water is a valuable natural resource and plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of any country or region. Although India has vast surface water resources, the same are very unevenly distributed over
space and time. Over the years, increasing population, growing industrialization, expanding agriculture and rising standards of living have pushed up the demand for water. Most rivers of India are plagued with
inter-state disputes which have emerged as one of the most belligerent issues in the Indian Federalism today due to disagreements over the use, distribution and control of inter-state river basin waters. This paper attempts to review and evaluate the major inter-state river conflicts or disputes in India. The paper also tries to analyze the major causes of inter-state river conflicts and suggest some strong measures to
resolve the conflicts quickly and amicably. The importance of different constitutional remedies as a part of inter-state river disputes resolve process has also been discussed in the paper. The study also suggests that
inter-state river water conflicts have to be settled by dialogues and discussions on the basis of equitable apportionment which is a globally accepted principle.
