The Indian Judicial System and the Contribution of the National Legal Services Authority
Manjit Mondal, Assistant Professor, Krishnanagar Government College, Nadia, West Bengal, India |
The Indian Constitution has provided certain, social, economic and political rights to all
citizens of India and the responsibility to protect these rights are given in the hands of the
judiciary. Judicial process has become very expensive for poor sections of society and in
India a large section of people belong to that group. The Govt. of India formulated the
National Legal Service Authorities Law 1987 in order to provide justice to everyone. It
provides free legal assistance to the poor and needy people. The National Legal Service
Authority organizes Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes. As a result, it reduces
the burden of the court pertaining to the backlog and pendency of cases. It also spreads
Legal literacy and awareness undertaking social justice litigation etc. In this way, NALSA
helps in providing justice to all the sections of society.
