A famous novel ‘Parajita Samrat’ written by a great Bengali novelist Ramapada
Chowdhuri was first published in 1965. Some real pictures of Middle class Bengali life are
beautifully depicted in this novel. Decline of human values in Middle class life is much
debated issue nowadays. With the change of time, a lot of contradiction has also appeared
in the Middle class Bengali life. Under the grip of all-consuming consumerism, people are
losing their sense of ethics, they are taking bribes, College and University students are
getting involved in prostitution. Some people even commit serious crimes like murder and
kidnapping for extra money. The space od ideals in the world of politics is gradually
narrowing. Frequent party changes are no longer a blameworthy thing. Despite so much
happening in society, the silence of educated people amazes us. As time goes by, the protest
power of the highly educated people of the society is gradually decreasin. In fact, everyone
wants to keep themselves safe. Consumeism is the root of this decadence of Bengali society.
This all-consuming consumerism that has long ago embraced the Bengali society and made
people its puppets is clearly depicted in Ramapada Chowdhuri’s great novel ‘Parajita
Samrat’. | |
