ABSTRACT | ||
The distinction between science and pseudoscience is crucial for both practical and theoretical reasons. Practically, pseudoscience negatively impacts education, healthcare, and decision-making. Theoretically, without a clear demarcation, the public may struggle to understand the nature of scientific inquiry. Therefore, establishing criteria to differentiate science from pseudoscience is essential. This article examines two major criteria of demarcation: the verifiability principle and the falsifiability principle. The verifiability principle suggests that a statement is meaningful only if it can be empirically verified, while the falsifiability principle, introduced by Karl Popper, asserts that scientific theories must be testable and capable of being proven false. However, philosopher Larry Laudan challenges the possibility of demarcation, arguing that existing criteria often fail to distinguish science from pseudoscience and may even classify pseudoscientific claims as scientific. This article also explores particular methodological scientism as a possible approach to addressing the limitations of traditional demarcation criteria. By critically evaluating these perspectives, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on how to effectively separate genuine scientific inquiry from pseudoscientific claims. | ||
