Bijon Bhattacharya’s Janoneta: Reading and Review Jibankrishna Patra, Associate Professor, Department of Bengali, Bir Bikram Memorial College, Agartala, Tripura, India
One act play ‘Jananeta’ was written by playwright Bijan Bhattacharya who set the background of the Bengal famine for his drama of 1943. The character of public leader in the drama ‘Jananeta’ is equally relevant today even after seven decades of independent India. The public leader Narendranath’s character has been portrayed in contrast to the real public leader. The character has followed the dramatist’s intention. Narendranath’s follower Laxmikanta, Trilochan, Sahayram Jabbur, Sadu khan’s taste of Black market has ruined the life of ordinary farmers and has also made them helpless. Is this helplessness not visible in the 21st century? And public leader Narendranath is not a villain in the true sense? All these queries will be answered in the discussion article.
