The World Tour of the World Poet by Air
Priya Dey, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Raiganj University, West Bengal, India
The Greatest poet Rabindranath Tagore loved to travel. He started first travelling with his father Debendranath Tagore at the age of 11 and the journey was ended when he was 79 years old. He travelled to five continents and 34 countries in total. Traveling was not the purpose of the poet; his main purpose was to convey the culture of India to everyone. He used various vehicles to cover this long journey. Sometimes he used ship, train and plane. He travelled by air in three times in total. The first time was on 16th April, 1921. He came from New York to London by ship. Thereafter, Tagore had chosen aeroplane to travel from London to Paris. For the second time, in May 1921, the poet's visit from Sweden to Berlin was arranged by plane. But this journey was cancelled due to safety of the plane. Then on April 11, 1932, the poet and his daughter-in-law and some other companions traveled to Paris by plane from Dumdum Aerodome. The news of this journey was published in various newspapers of that time. Also the poet himself has recorded his experience of air travel in the book 'Parosye'. On June 3, 1932, he returned to Calcutta by plane from Persia. He enjoyed flying in the sky by ignoring all the prevention and difficulties of air travel.
