Reception of the Life of Consciousness in Selected Bengali Films of the Twentieth Century Suparna Mondal, Ph.D. Research Scholar, Centre for Comparative Literature, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India
The birth of Chaitanya in the year 1486 is a crucial event in Bengali social, cultural, and literary sphere. If we discuss about literature particularly, the advent of Chaitanya brought new life to Bengali literature. Not only Vaishnava Padavali, the life of Chaitanya inspired Bengali poets to write hagiographies based on his life as well. By twentieth century, the effect of Chaitanya surely declined but the sense of devotion and emotion for Chaitanya was still present in the hearts of Bengali people. We can find relevant proofs in the depiction of the life of Chaitanya in the then newly arrived medium of the films. The first phase of Indian Cinema saw an abundance of Puranic stories. We can identify the films based on Chaitanya’s life in this category as they represent Puranic devotion along with historical contextualization. We can find films like Shrigouranga (1933), Shachidulal (1934), Nimai Sanyas (1940), Bishnupriya (1949), Bhagaban Shrikrishnachaitanya (1953), Nilachale Mahaprabhu (1957), Nader Nimai (1960), Nimai Sanyasi (1972), Nadia Nagar (1986) etc. This paper has tried to discuss selected films based on Chaitanya’s life in context with the Bengali hagiographies written earlier.
