Gandhi and His India in the Pursuit of Unity in Diversity Dr. Ajay Kumar Das, Professor, Department of Bengali, Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya, Chaitanyapur, Haldia, Purba Medinipur, India.
He is Gandhi, the immortal soul, who used non-violence as the weapon in the freedom movement of India, who tried to sanctify the human society through peace, tenderness of heart. He was the new messenger of the doctrine of non-violence of Mahavir, Buddha, Christ and Chaitannya. Principles of Christ had a deep influence on him. Christ taught humanity the lesson of tolerance, devoting his own life. India is a land of diversity. Innumerable differences are there in India - in caste, religion, language and culture. Inspite of that, Indianness is our identity. Gandhiji thought that unity in diversity is possible through innate wisedom and vision of truth. Gandhiji sought for universal humanity instead of narrow nationalism. India to him, was a pilgrimage to mankind. He believed that the essence of all religions is the same and there is a spiritual unity in all religions. He was a great preacher of equality and amity in all religious beliefs. He gave importance on economic equality. He felt the learning all languages besides Hindi. He began to consider the possibility of a universal language for the people of India, being a multilingual nation. Gandhiji wanted to stitch the different cultures of a vast country like India in the light of assimilated idealisms of all nations and political philosophy. He thought non-violence, non-cooperation, spiritual strength and love are the ways to achieve Swaraj. Gandhiji was an apathetic Indian saint. He paved the way of not only the unity of Hindu - Mislims, but also the unity of whole mankind.
