The Barak Valley is made up of Cachar, Sribhumi (Karimganj) and Hailakandi districts of Assam. One of the rural traditional fairs of the Barak Valley is the Baruni Mela. The fair is held every year in a huge open field called 'Melar Char' in Chowrangi in Katigarh block of Cachar district. It covers an area of approximately twenty bighas of land. Baruni Mela is closely related to Baruni Snan. Baruni Snan is held every year in the month of Chaitra on the third day of Madhukrishna. The fair is held every year on Madhukrishna Trayodashi Tithi in the month of Chaitra through Baruni Snan. There is a legend behind the fair being held on this day that on this day, Kapil Muni met Shiva after meditating for many days on the banks of the Barak River. Earlier, the fair was held for fifteen days. Currently, its duration is one month. During the fair, many people from different regions, regardless of race, religion and caste, gather around the fair. Among the people present, there are Bengali Hindus, Bengali Muslims, as well as people from different tribes. In the article under discussion, we are highlighting various information related to the Baruni Mela and the importance and impact of the Baruni Mela in this region. | ||
