| The Theory of Purushartha in the Light of
Charvaka Philosophy: A Survey Jayanta Bayen, State-Aided College Teacher (Category-1), Department of Philosophy, Rampurhat Mahavidyalaya, Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
‘Purusartha’ , the desired object of human life , according to the conventional thought , is of
the four types namely – Dharma (virtue ) , Artha (wealth) , Kama (sensual pleasure) and
Moksha (liberation) . Others Indian Philosophers without Charvakas accepted the four ends
of human activity (Purusartha). According to them, moksha is the highest ends of life. But
materialist charvakas admit two types of purusartha – Artha and Kama, deny Dharma and
Moksha, because they have no power to produce the physical happiness .The charvaka
called wealth purusartha , but not the main it . Wealth (Artha) is the secondary purusartha as
an aid to sensual pleasure. But the ‘Kama’ is the supreme end of life. It gives fullness to the
human life . There is no such thing as a soul after destroy the body. This life centered on the
body is the only real. Physical happiness is what people want. The foolish are deprived of
the pleasures of this world in the hope of liberation. The clever people enjoy physical
happiness and live with great joy . So charvakas declared the ‘kama’ is the highest goal of
human life (Parama Purusartha). In this paper I have tried to discuss the main characteristics
of the ‘kama’ as a highest goal, according to the charvakas philosophy.
