Computer and Ethics: A Philosophical Review Swapna Sarkar, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, West Bengal State University, West Bengal, India. Atreyee Mukherjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, West Bengal State University, West Bengal, India.
In general, we have perceived computers merely as a conglomeration of mechanical tools, but society has increasingly emphasized the importance of ethical principles in conjunction with computers. I have chosen to discuss an article titled 'Computer and Ethics: A Philosophical Analysis' as my subject of discourse. Here, it will be demonstrated that understanding computers solely as advanced information technology is insufficient; alongside this, it is imperative for human society to acknowledge its ethical dimension. Aligning computers and ethics under the same framework, I have initially highlighted a significant issue in my article's discussion. That issue is the lack of ethical communication with computers. Now, I will mention these problems succinctly through the course of my brief discussion. Computer advancement has brought us to a point where the crimes associated with it, which were once considered the most abhorrent offenses in society, have become palpable. When we talk about such crimes, hacking and software piracy are brought to the forefront. Hacking involves stealing information from others' computer profiles, while software piracy entails the unauthorized use, copying, or theft of software. However, not all activities carried out through these means are unethical; ethical hacking, for instance, is conducted by government-hired hackers to gather confidential information from adversary countries, which can contribute to the security of our nation in the future. Furthermore, alongside the advancements in technology, humans have created various sophisticated machines, robots, drones, etc., which operate within the realm of artificial intelligence. Moreover, discussing the ethical and unethical aspects of computer technology, it is essential to delve deeper into the issue and explore two distinct categories. The first category concerns the role and ethical implications of artificial intelligence in society, while the second category focuses on the integration of ethics and unethical practices in computing. By addressing these categories, I aim to progressively advance the discourse of this article.
