Partition and River Narratives: River-centric Bengali Novels of the 21st Century
Sudhamay Mondal, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, University of Burdwan, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, India.
Rivers have always been more than mere geographical features; they are lifelines that shape the cultural, social, and emotional landscapes of communities. For the people living by rivers, their homeland encompasses not just the land but the flowing waters that sustain and nurture them. These rivers are integral to their daily lives, serving as sources of sustenance, transportation, and spiritual significance. The Partition of India in 1947, however, severed many of these riverine communities from their beloved rivers, often transforming these waterways into borders or symbols of displacement. This monumental event not only disrupted lives but also redefined the relationship between people and their environment. This research paper, "Partition and River Stories: Selected River-based Bengali Novels of the 21st Century," delves into the intricate connection between partition and riverine communities. It examines how partition influenced the role, position, and people's longing for the river, as vividly depicted in novels like Abdul Mannan Syed's ‘Ichhamatir eparoper’, Ranabir Purkayastha's ‘Surama Gangar Pani’, Tanvir Mokkammel's ‘Kirtinasha’ and Syed Shamsul Haq's ‘Nodi Karo Noy’. Through these literary works, the paper explores the profound impact of partition on the cultural and emotional landscape of those who lived by the rivers, highlighting their enduring bond with these waterways despite the upheavals of history.
