In 2021, Dipangshu Das’s short story collection Udbastu was published by Nabadiganta Prakashani, Silchar. Although the backdrop of his stories is the Barak Valley, they represent Indian society as a whole. All the stories in the collection deal with various socio-economic realities of Indian social life. Even in the twenty-first century, he has written stories centered on issues such as superstition, blind beliefs, evil practice, regressive customs etc that continue to persist in Indian society. Some stories explore the familial and social realities of women’s lives. The collection also includes several stories about the rootless lives of those affected by the Partition of India, portraying the socio-economic struggles, emotions and contribution in nation building of the both displaced during Partition and the contemporary displaced. In addition, some stories highlight significant contemporary social issues and realities such as brain drain, cultural degradation, family disintegration, domestic violence and the question of equal rights.
