Based on the story 'Amma' by Sushil Jana, Gautam Ghosh produced the film 'Dakhal' (1982 AD) and won the Swarna Kamal award. The storyteller portrays the poverty, struggle and exploitation of the primitive tribal Kakmara people, the resistance and protest of the poor proletariat against that exploitation. While following the original narrative, the director has brought out the 'multidimensional resonance' of the struggle of the nomadic tribes, the conflicts of the Indian tribal society, the unfolding of permanent vested interests in the wake of these clan conflicts and the status of women in the post-independence period. This image of deprivation, exploitation and protest can also be seen in his first short film 'Maa Bhumi' (1979 AD). The director Gautam Ghosh has created a novel in the narrative in simple language with extraordinary skill. In order to portray the past in the context of the present, sometimes he narrated the story directly through the mouth of the character and sometimes he resorted to multiple flashbacks. Likewise, he has narrated the events of the past while telling the fragmentary events of the present. The story moves multiple times from present to past, past to present. However, it did not spoil the mood of the story anywhere. In addition, the director has narrated the present story while maintaining the essence of the past story in the wonderful way - without stopping the story, he has highlighted the events of the past, the actions and reactions of the characters in the context of the present. In the first scene the arrival of the nomadic group along the river bed and in the last scene they disappear like the sand of the ford— bridging the first and the last scene, the director has shown their life flow with great skill.
