Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee's Political Life, Ideological Transformation and the Mystery of His Death: A Comprehensive Historical Analysis Hapejul Halsana, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Sudhirranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya, West Bengal, IndiaMany regards Dr. Syama
Prasad Mookerjee as the founder or the "Father of West Bengal."
During the Partition of 1947, he played a pivotal political role in opposing
the inclusion of undivided Bengal into Pakistan and actively campaigned for the
incorporation of Hindu-majority regions of Bengal into India. He was a
distinguished educationist, politician, and nationalist leader. He became the
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the age of just 33, earning
the distinction of being one of the youngest individuals to hold that office.
Subsequently, he served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in independent
India's first cabinet. In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which is
considered the political precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He
vehemently opposed the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir; a
famous slogan associated with him was "One Nation, One Constitution, One
Leader, One Flag." In 1953, the then-administration of Sheikh Abdullah
arrested him for entering Jammu and Kashmir without a special permit. He passed
away in custody on June 23, 1953; the circumstances surrounding his death
remain a subject of debate to this day. His political stance regained
prominence following the abrogation of the special provisions of Article 370 in
2019. The BJP and its supporters view his principle of "One Nation, One
Constitution" as the ideological precursor to this decision. Currently,
his political legacy has acquired renewed significance in the context of West
Bengal's history, the Partition, nationalism, and the Kashmir issue. The
observance of June 20 as "West Bengal Day" and June 23 his death
anniversary as "Balidan Diwas" (Day of Sacrifice) has further
highlighted his historical legacy. Thus, his role in the history of Indian
politics is of immense importance.
