A Glimpse of Assamese Culture: An Analytical Reading
Dr. Shimul Pal, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Satindra Mohan Dev College, Lakkhipur, Cachar, Assam, India.
Assam, a captivating expanse of natural splendour in the northeastern part of India, resembles a meticulously crafted emerald shaped by the voice of a goddess. Abundant in picturesque, naturally beautiful landscapes, the state seems to have been adorned with divine opulence by the hands of God. Throughout history, people have come here in droves, attracted by this enchanting sight and Mamtamayi Assam welcomed everyone and gave them a place in her arms. The combination of various castes and tribes has formed the culture and folk religion of this Mahamilan tirtha. Hence, Assam is an area of diversity in terms of unequal culture. A culture of harmony has been created here due to the coming together of different people from different places. But our cultural fabric, which is meticulously woven over time, is currently under threat from the forces of globalization. The whirlwind of so-called colonial modernity continuously tries to dull, depreciate and remove cultural gems from our heritage. Yet, no matter how much the current of the time tries to remove us from the roots of this culture, we cannot move away because the spiritual country or spiritual culture cannot be forgotten. We shall swim in the current of time but keep our heritage and cultural roots at the centre. Our cultural roots have evolved into a sanctuary, much like a bird's nest. Just as the bird finds solace in its nest at the end of the day, we, too, shall navigate the currents of time, accumulating myriad experiences and ultimately returning to the comforting embrace of our cultural nest.
