Women in the Views of Gandhi and Ambedkar: A Comparative Study
Dr. Ajay Kumar Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya, Chaitanyapur, Haldia, Purba Medinipur, India
Women played a great role in the life of both Gandhiji and Ambedkar. Putlibai, Gandhiji's mother wrote extensively, particularly on the introduction to Gandhiji's non-violence movement. Gandhiji gained his spiritual base from his mother. Besides, it goes without saying that Kasturbai, his wife, had also a mentionable role in Gandhiji's life and activity. She was enduring too. In Indian freedom movement, when he was leading the movement in the way of non-violence and non-cooperation, he got the unique co-fighters like Sarala Devi, daughter of Rabindranath's elder sister Swarnakumari Devi, British young lady, Mira Behn and Sarojini Naidu. Both Ramabai and Dr. Sarada Kabir, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's first wife and the lady, whom he married after the death of his first wife respectively, gave care, inspiration to Ambedkar's selfless dedicated life.
But there was a big difference between Gandhiji and Ambedkar in their approach to women. Gandhiji gave importance to tradition and heritage. Ambedkar always sought for the untouchable and underprivileged women. Both were against the child marriage. But though Gandhiji supported the widow marriage of minors, he did not agree with the opinion in favour of widow-marriage of adult women. Whereas Ambedkar whole-heartedly supported the widow-marriage irrespective of age. Both thought of dowry as stigma of the society. But unlike Ambedkar Gandhiji did not go in favour of birth control. Gandhiji laid emphasis on women's household duties, nourishing of children and hand craft. On the other hand Ambedkar craved for modern education for the women, redemption from oppression of male-dominated society over the women. He fought for the equal rights of women and men. It may be summed up that regarding the approach to women Ambedkar started there exactly where Gandhiji ended.
