Harishankar Jaladas's Kaibartakatha: The Economic, Religious, and Cultural Life of the Fishing Community
Prakash Haldar, Asst.Prof, Dept. of History, Chakdaha College, Nadia, West Bengal
ABSTRACT
Harishankar Jaldas is one of the most prominent voices representing the subaltern people in contemporary Bengali literature. His depiction of the marginalized fishermen community is deeply rooted in his own memories of life. Having faced racial discrimination throughout his student days and professional life due to his surname, he was inspired to delve into the history of the fishermen community. In response to the racist attitudes of society, he used his pen as a tool to portray the socio-cultural, economic, and religious beliefs of marginalized people in his writings. This article explores the cultural world, religious beliefs, customs, and economic conditions of the fishermen community. Once, the fishing community held considerable ethnic prestige in society. However, today, they are racially oppressed, economically distressed, politically and culturally neglected. They, themselves, are largely responsible for this decline. Presently, there is a growing tendency among them to abandon their surname, traditions, and culture. To restore the lost dignity of the fishermen community, it is crucial to bring their socio-cultural practices, religious beliefs, and economic activities into the light of research.
