From Love to Nature and Politics in the Construction of Life: A Study on the Poems of Selim Mustafa Shantanu Bhattacharya, Independent Researcher, Department of Postgraduate Bengali, Government Degree College, Dharmanagar, North Tripura, India
In the 1970s, Tripura poet Selim Mustafa prefers to delve into life as a reflection of himself, as he witnesses life transforming repeatedly. He does not regurgitate clichés in his poetry; instead, he changes himself in the continuity of life for the sake of his art. He writes fluidly, expressing his own thoughts. The soil, jampui hills, leftist politics, and the pull of the rural people in Tripura continuously inspire him to create poetry. Just as a river flows in its own way—sometimes calm, sometimes turbulent—Selim Mustafa maintains a similar current in his work. Without this, his poetry could not experience such transformation. From the beginning of his writing journey to the present, the poet has changed constantly, not only for the sake of writing but also due to his connection to humanity. If literature is the mirror of life, then people are its reflection. Selim, however, presents a consistent image in his writing, which resonates in every line. Thus, he repeatedly finds his existence in the salty waters of life, which encompass love, nature, politics, and protest—a complete life captured through the stroke of his pen. This essence makes him unique. Consequently, the poet of the '70s remains relevant and significant to us today, offering readers a glimpse into his world.
