Rabindranath’s Concept of Nationalism
Dr. Makhan Samanta, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Political Science, Ghatal R.S. Mahavidyalaya, West Bengal, India |
We have found the appearance of Rabindranath in the colonial India. He had built the
concept of nationalism on the humanistic background. To him, nationalism is a kind of love
of one for his own country and to incite self-power in every citizen. The self-power
according to him is self- consciousness,self- respect and the full establishment of
emotion, that actually will help a person to get freedom from any kind of dominance of
one’s own country .you have to love your own nation but that would be without
neglecting the other nations. He also added every community in colonial India have to
forget their own interest so that they will be united with nationalistic flow. He actually
wanted nationalism to be wrapped not only in the political background but also in the
philosophical and spiritual background.
Creating damage in another country in the name of loving your own country –such kind
such type of blind love is not acknowledged by him. Such kind of nationalism not only, do
harm to and individual but also to society that is to all. It moral development is not
flourished among the Indians shaking of foreign garments wouldn’t help to bring swaraj to
india.so he did not allow boycotting the foreign elements of Gandhiji.
He thinks the western nationalism as naked and hostile .such kind of nationalism would
destroy the natural instinct of mankind. At the same time, western nationalism actually
creates a riot among different communities that brings crisis in the total world. He also
added, the main motive of western nationalism is to exploit the dependent countries from
financial background .finally,Rabindranath says that,he actually does not consider
nationalism as an inhibition in the path of humanistic background. |
