Life, Health, and Happiness in Yogic Philosophy: A Holistic Perspective
Biswajit Pasman,
Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol, West Bengal, India
The fundamental basis of all classical Indian discourse is liberation from suffering—that is, seeking the means to attain happiness by overcoming sorrow. Not only in Vedic literature but also across various schools of Indian philosophy, from their own perspectives, discussions have been held on how individuals can lead a disciplined life and progress toward the ultimate puruṣārtha. At the core of these discussions lies the theory rooted in Yoga Darśana (the philosophy of Yoga). Yoga is not merely a physical practice, it is a complete life philosophy that ensures the holistic development of human life. Maharishi Patanjali's Yoga Sūtra serves as the foundational theoretical text of Yoga highlighting the interconnections between life, health, and happiness.
In this paper first the fundamental concepts of Yoga Darśana will be discussed, particularly the importance of cittavṛtti nirodha (the self-control of mental fluctuations) and self-inquiry. Following that, the role of Yoga in health and hygiene will be explained, highlighting Aṣṭāṅga Yoga, which consists of eight limbs: (1) Yama (2) Niyama (3) Āsana (4) Prāṇāyāma (5) Pratyāhāra (6) Dhāraṇā (7) Dhyāna and (8) Samādhi. Through these eight limbs of Yoga, the physical and mental benefits will be emphasized. The Yoga Sūtra particularly underscores the importance of mental harmony and an ethical life, which aid in the ultimate realization of happiness.
Subsequently, the paper will discuss the philosophical and practical aspects of happiness, exploring the true nature of happiness in the light of the Aṣṭāṅga Yoga system of the Yoga Sūtra. Finally the relevance of Yoga Darśana in modern life will be highlighted, analyzing how it can make personal and social life healthy, disciplined, and joyful. Through this discussion, readers will understand that Yoga is not merely physical exercise but a thoughtful life philosophy that benefits both the individual and society.
