The Efficient Cause of the Universe: An Analysis According to Nyāya philosophy Sohel Rana, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy and the Life World, Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Who ignited the radiant flame of the universe, and whose unseen hand guides the celestial dance of existence? i.e., who has created and maintains this beautiful universe, has traditionally been central to metaphysical philosophical inquiry. In the Indian philosophical sphere, Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika philosophy provides a rational and theistic account of the efficient cause (nimitta kāraṇa) of this world, where God is established as an intelligent being, the creator and regulator of this universe. According to the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika philosophy, the world is not created by itself. For them, the order, purposiveness, and intelligibility observed within this world indicate the existence of an intelligent, efficient cause behind its creation. Classical texts like Nyāyasūtra, along with the commentaries of Vātsyāyana and Uddyotakara, employ a systematic inferential argument (anumāna) to prove the existence of God as the cause of the existent world. The foundation of their argument lies in the theory of causation (kārya-kāraṇa). They consider this existing world as an effect (kārya) and seek to establish the existence of an intelligent being (kāraṇa) as its cause. They argue that, just as a pot (ghaṭa) implies the existence of a potter (kumbhakāra) responsible for its creation, this well-ordered universe indicates the existence of its creator. In this paper, an attempt has been made to discuss the role of God as the efficient cause in the origination of the world from the perspective of Nyāya philosophy. In doing so, we have begun by discussing the theory of causation and the three kinds of causation: material, non-material, and efficient cause. Then, we critically examine the Nyāya theory of the efficient cause of the world. In conclusion, a brief overview has been provided regarding the significance and influence of efficient cause in the origination of the world.
