Reason, Faith, and Hermeneutics: A Philosophical Study Khokan SK, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, The University of Burdwan, Purba Bardhaman, India
This paper offers a philosophical inquiry into the complex relationship between reason, faith, and hermeneutics, examining how human understanding is shaped through rational reflection, religious belief, and interpretive practices. Reason has traditionally been regarded as the primary tool for attaining objective knowledge, while faith is often viewed as grounded in revelation, trust, and commitment beyond empirical justification. Rather than treating reason and faith as mutually exclusive, this study argues that they are dialogically related and mutually illuminating. Hermeneutics provides the mediating framework through which this relationship can be understood, as it emphasizes interpretation, historical context, and the situatedness of human understanding. Drawing on both Western and non-Western philosophical traditions, the paper explores how sacred texts, philosophical arguments, and lived experiences are interpreted within horizons of meaning shaped by culture, language, and tradition. By engaging thinkers such as Augustine, Aquinas, Kant, Gadamer, and selected Indian philosophers, the inquiry demonstrates that understanding itself is a hermeneutical act in which reason and faith interact dynamically. The paper concludes that hermeneutics does not weaken rationality or faith but deepens both by revealing the interpretive conditions under which meaning, truth, and belief are constituted.
