The Perspective of Indian Philosophical Traditions on Determining the Nature of Time Badsha Midya, Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, Kazi Nazrul University, Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal, India
As easy as, it sounds to hear the word kāla (time), it is difficult to explain the concept of kala. All of our lives are bound in the web of time, which cannot be broken even by our best efforts. No thoughts, idea, actions are possible without the use of kala. Kala is inextricably linked with our lives. Kala refers to past, present and future of an action. Again, when kal means counting, it means time, day, season, age. And in another sense, by the term, the different stages of human life, ie childhood, adolescence, youth, old age, etc. are meant. In Bengali literature, Kala is sometimes compared to flux. Among all these interpretations of the concept of kala, we cannot reveal its true nature. None of the explanations given about kala is accepted as satisfactory. So, Augustine's statement seems to be correct- “If no one asks me, I know what it is, if I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not what”. Although, the true nature of time cannot be revealed from the above explanation, in the present article I will try to see its true nature can be understood in the context of Indian philosophy.
