Sarala Mandi, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Netaji Mahavidyalaya, Hooghly, West Bengal, India
Buddhadeb Guha occupies a unique place in Bengali narrative literature. In his short stories, as in his novels, Buddhadeb Guha imprints his identity as a socially conscious and rebellious artist, depicting the divide and deception between the rich and poor, their fragile vanity, moral decay, and generational conflict. A large part of his short stories filled with the presence of forests, hills, tribal men and women, their traditional beliefs, customs, deities, flowers, creepers and forest animals. He has kept these neglected and unacknowledged people alive through his creation. In Buddhadeb Guha’s short stories, we find vivid portrayals of their lives and ways of living. Most of his short stories are enriched with various elements of folk culture – folk beliefs, folk rituals, folk deities, folk instruments, folk songs and traditional beverages – all of which reflect the vibrant pulse of the common people. Buddhadeb Guha, as a socially aware artist, leaves a mark of protest in his fiction. a keen observer of life, his realized how innumerable events occur in human existence and are eventually engulfed by time, while only the essence of joy and sorrow remains – eternal and universal. As an artist of these emotions, Guha bears witness to his age and society, expressing the eternal human experience with rare honesty. In this lies the essence of his artistic achievement.
