Mahabharata: Witness to the Flow of Time — The Two Fraternal Figures
Madhurima Das, Postgraduate, Department of Bengali, Visva-Bharati; B.Ed., University of Burdwan, India.
The stories of the Mahabharata that I was introduced to in my childhood may not have had the epic resonance, but the poetic grandeur that appealed to children could be found in it. Later on, I could not resist the urge to read all the dramas, stories, novels, poems, essays, translations based on the Mahabharata outside of the curriculum-centred studies of the student life. There are written evidential documents that focused on exploring and discussing solely one character or a comparative finding of the intertwined including romantic relationships of the great epic Mahabharata; however, the two characters that remained in shadow of discussion compared to other characters are the author of the epic Vyas deva himself and Mahamahim Bhishma (His Majesty Bhishma).
It is true that the existing literature on the Mahabharata has provided insights and paved the way for thinking for the authors, novelists, dramatists, critic, and intellects of afterwards, but the discussion found regarding the relationship between Vyas deva and Bhishma is more of a political discussion. But aside from politics, was there ever any kind of chemistry about them? In that quest, this research has explored the range of relevant essays, dramas, novels, stories, and documents for an in-depth understanding. The two contemporary Baimatreya (foster) brothers -- Gangeya Devabrata (Devabrata- the son of Ganga) and Krishna-dwaipayana are of similar age; One who left family and domestic life for the welfare of family, the other one who became averse to samsara (worldly concerns) but entered the Kuru-Samsara to protect the Kuru family. Early in life, destiny tied them together somewhat inexorably. However, over time, the chemistry of human ties ensnared the two unlike brothers. Finding the chemistry and enchantment of that relationship is the broad objective of this paper.
