The Mahabharata Narrative and the Play Sharmishtha Natak: Acceptance and Rejection of Story Elements
Shibnath Dutta, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Bhasha-Bhavan, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
‘Sharmmishtha Natak’ by Madhusudan Dutta is the first Bengali play written in the European style. This ‘Sharmmishtha Natak’ is widely known and discussed in the history of the Bengali plays. At the time of writing, this play was criticized by the antiquarians and greatly congratulated by the modernists for its style. Its modern style and tastefulness are also highlighted many times. This play is widely discussed in the later period as well. But how the basic story of the Mahabharata was changed in his play and how much that change is valuable for the dramatic action did not get so much attention. We are going to discuss this topic here. The basic story of the Aadiparva and the story described by Madhusudan both will be compared keeping side by side. Sometimes, according to us, the basic story could be more helpful for the dramatic action of this play than the story described by Madhusudan. In addition, that could be more helpful for the growth of its characters, except in some rare cases. The metaphorical significance of the story in this play will also be important in our discussion.
