The Great Poet Kalidasa and Rabindranath Tagore: A Comparative Study
Ibrahim Ali Mondal, Research Scholar, Department of Sanskrit, Seacom Skills University, Bolpur, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India.
Although separated by two thousand years, Rabindranath had a deep connection with Kalidasa. Similarities can be found between Kalidasa’s mentality and that of Rabindranath’s.That is the thing which is deeply ingrained within poets and within us. Just as a poet colors the reflections of the outer world with the sweetness of his own mind, Rabindranath also imbued Kalidasa with the sweetness of his own mind. Rabindranath’s Kalidasa,is the “Kalidasa” who is embraced by the mind of Rabindranath.”From a young age, the poet became acquainted with Kalidasa’s poetry through a home tutor. During adolescence, in the era of “Chhabi O Gaan” (Pictures and Songs), the poet encountered Kalidasa in the realm of beauty’s allure, in the mysterious imagination of an unspecified romantic heroine.” Kumarasambhava,” “Shakuntala,” and “Meghaduta” have most inspired Rabindranath’s awareness of love and beauty. “Meghaduta” and “Ritusanhara” have added new dimensions to the poet’s vision of nature. In the poems “Chaitali,” “Tapoban,” and “Prachin Bharat,” glimpses of the Raghuvansha can be seen. The epic “Kumarasambhava” has infused new colors into Rabindranath’s romantic imagination. In Kalidasa’s romantic fantasies, Rabindranath has discovered both the earthly impurities and the heavenly purity, the frenzy of youth, and the tranquility of old age. “Kumarasambhava” has not remained confined to poetry alone; from “Shakuntala” and “Meghaduta” as well, Rabindranath has extracted the essence of love to create exquisite forms.
