Famine and Social Degradation in the Stories of Manik Bandopadhyay: With Reference to ‘Aaj Kal Porshu’ and ‘Dushashoniyo’

The devastating famine of 1943 is reflected in several short stories by Manik Bandopadhyay. In his works, we observe the tragic consequences of acute food shortages, lack of clothing, women’s helplessness, social degradation, and exploitation caused by the famine. In this context, his stories “Aaj Kal Parashu” and “Dushashaniya” are particularly noteworthy. Through the female characters Mukta, Bhuti, and Rabeya, the author demonstrates that famine does not merely create a scarcity of food, but also endangers women’s freedom, dignity, and very existence.
 
The study reveals that due to the shortage of clothing, women become confined indoors, humiliated, and mentally distressed, ultimately moving toward tragic ends. In particular, Rabeya’s self-sacrifice emerges as a symbol of extreme female helplessness. This helplessness stems from the scarcity of clothing and the severe inequality in distribution driven by the exploiting class, culminating in Rabeya’s deliberate self-destruction. This outcome represents the predetermined tragic conclusion of the fragmented scenes throughout the stories.
 
In my discussion, I will attempt to show how, in the stories “Aaj Kal Parashu” and “Dushashaniya,” the narrative transcends individual tragedy to portray the broader social and psychological crisis faced by women oppressed by famine.
