“Karagar” by Manmatha Roy: A Mirror of Contemporary Times Junun Akhter, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Vivekananda College for Women, Kolkata, India
Versatile genius Manmath Ray composed plays of various genres. A notable genre among these is patriotic drama in a mythological setting. The notable drama of this period is ‘Karagar’. The drama that inspired the countrymen to break the iron bars of the prison and bring freedom was the ‘Karagar’. In the five-act drama had been written ‘Karagar’ in a particular political context, Gandhiji started the civil disobedience movement by breaking the salt satyagraha in the 6th April 1930. The movement spread across the country. Gandhiji was imprisoned on 5th May. Gandhi’s imprisonment intensified the movement. Great freedom fighters of the country were imprisoned by the British government. Manmath Ray had written the drama ‘Karagar’ in this political context within 14th days. The story of ‘Karagar’ darama has been taken from mythology, It is not a proper mythical drama. It was not possible to write a play with a direct political statement in subjugated India, so the dramatist highlighted the anti-Britishness of the subjugated Indians under the guise of the myth of Krishna’s slaying of Kansa. My point of discussion is how the dramatist portrays the picture of contemporary India within the framework of mythology and this play in today’s context.
