Various Rivers, Streams and Waterbodies of Mekhliganj Subdivision: A Socio-Cultural Review Prosanjit Roy, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Raiganj University, West Bengal, India.
Mekhliganj is a subdivision of Cooch Behar district in the state of West Bengal. There are total two blocks in the subdivision, one Mekhliganj block and one Haldibari block. Teesta flows through this subdivision. Also several small rivers like Dharla River, Jalsuya River, Sungli River, Saniyajan River, Sati River, Giriya River, Buri Teesta River, Sutunga River, Dharaikuri River, Singira River etc. flow through this subdivision. Where most rivers and their various branches flow from one state to another. So the population here is like this river – Rajvanshi, Bodo, Rava, Kharu etc. live here. And where there is more population, there is more linguistic diversity. Yet it is as if the story is garlanded with the same thread. That is what comes up in the context of these rivers and reservoirs. So the social and cultural ties of the people of this region are unbreakable with water culture. Worshiping riverine culture, marrying river to river to mark the cultural milieu of the region. Various myths and worship of water also come up in this context.
