Mithilesh Bhattacharya is a very socially conscious and environmental sensitive writer. He has been regularly practicing bengali short stories since the sixties. His contemporary social environment is clearly reflected in his writings. Financial recession, moral degradation, turbulent environment of Assam, Partition victim’s life struggle etc have come up in his stories. The background of his stories is mainly Barak Valley. His stories seem to hold the prevailing picture of Barak’s post-independence socio-economic environment along with the entire country.
Keywords: Barak valley, Post-independence, middle-class, communal violence, citizenship.
