The tenth and eleventh
centuries North India were featured with emergence of small regional kingdoms.
Beyond the north-west frontiers of India, in Central Asia, kingdoms and empires
were rising to prominence under Islamic influence. In that process two kingdoms
were prominent , viz Ghazna and other is Ghur and by the early 13th century they established their rule in North India in
the vicinity of Delhi region .The Turks whether the Ghaznavids or Ghurids
entered into India through the North
Western mountain passes , attracted by India’s well watered plains with fertile
soil, extending from the Punjab to the eastern borders of Bengal ,its rich and
flourishing cities and parts ,and its fabulous wealth generated by the hard
working peasants and skillful artisans , and experienced traders and
financers. The Turks were Nomads and lived in areas now known as
Mongolian and Sinkiang .Since the eighth century , they had been infiltrating
into region called Mawara-un-nahar (Transoxiana) between the river of Amu(Oxus)
and Syr , the Iranian rulers of the areas ,and the Abbasid caliphs ,brought in
the Turks as mercenaries and slaves ,and recruited them as palace guards ,after
converting them to Islam. After some time
in the end of the ninth century when
the Abbasid empire disintegrated and a series of expansionist states arose
, independent in nature but giving natural suzerainty to the caliph
and they legitimised their position by
granting them a formal letter or Manshur. most of these sultans were Turks.
