The Sensory Nature of the Mind: A Study of Dharmarajadhvarindra and the Nyaya-Vaisheshika Philosophy Prashanta Majhi, Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
Humans have always been curious about feelings and senses since time immemorial. And if
there comes to mind the feeling of something which apparently cannot be perceived by the
senses, then there is no more talk. Humans have roughly known that we have five senses for
receiving different kinds of sensations. And this is where the concept of human sixth sense
originated. According to many, this sixth sense is the mind. However, just as there is a
difference of opinion among different philosophers about the number of senses and there is
also a difference of opinion in Indian philosophy about whether the mind is a sense. For
example, the philosophies like Nyāẏa, Vaiśēṣika, Sāṅkhya, Yōga, Pūrba-Mīmānsā etc.
accept the mind as a sense, but according to philosophers like Buddhist Dinnaga, NeoVedantic Dharmarajadhvarindra etc. the mind is not a sense. However, even though these
conflicting views are mentioned, I will discuss them in detail without prolonging the subject
in the present article, and I will discuss the view of the Neo-Vaidantic
Dharmarajadhvarindra as the pūrbapakṣī and Nyaya-Vaishesh opinion as the
siddhāntapakṣī. atomic, categories, eternal-substance, mind, prameya, senses.
