Crisis of Post-Independence India in the Short Stories of Manoj Basu
Soumen Mondal, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Bankura University, Bankura, West Bengal, India
Based on the post-independence context of India, Manoj Bose's stories deal with three types of threats : communalism, refugee problem and language crisis. In stories centered on communalism, the author shows how communal mistrust arose out of mutual misunderstandings between Hindus and Muslims at the time. Along with this, he also showed that just as they remained terrified by falsely suspecting each other as enemies, they also later extended their helping hand to the heathen at the call of duty despite their own loss. In this way, the author leaves behind communal hatred and magnifies humanity. In stories centered on the refugee problem, minority Hindus came to India in droves from East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) fearing conversion. Some could not adapt there and returned to their old homes. Some have rebuilt their lives on Indian soil to defend themselves. In both cases, the refugee people are finally assured of humanity. Besides, the story written by the author about the problem that arose regarding the state language in independent India reveals his deep affection for the mother tongue. All in all, people, soil and language have got equal importance in Manoj Basu's story of this episode.
