Patriotism in the Short Stories of Manoj Basu Soumen Mondal, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Bankura University, West Bengal, India.
Patriotic stories are among the stories Manoj Bose wrote based on the historical context of India's freedom struggle. Two types of patriotism are observed in these stories. One is the epitome of true patriotism, the other hypocritical. Through the stories of true patriotism, the author wants to show respect to the freedom fighters and inspire the countrymen to sacrifice themselves for freedom. On the contrary, through stories of hypocritical patriotism, the author unmasks the pseudo-patriots and warns the countrymen against them. Even after the independence of the country, there is an awareness in his story that true freedom remains elusive to the countrymen because of these pseudo-patriots. Also, some of the stories capture his valuable thoughts on the value of the freedom gained at the cost of many sacrifices.
